Monel 400 is a solid-solution strengthened nickel-copper alloy that is resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures, as well as to salt and caustic solutions. It is one of the few alloys that retains its strength at sub-zero temperatures, making it a versatile material across a broad range of marine, chemical, and industrial applications.

Monel K-500 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel 400 with significantly greater strength and hardness. The enhanced properties are achieved through additions of aluminum and titanium, which form a gamma prime precipitate during age hardening. K-500 is the alloy of choice for high-strength, corrosion-resistant applications in marine and oil & gas environments.

Common questions about Monel alloys answered by our technical team.
Monel 400 is a solid-solution alloy with moderate strength (517 MPa tensile), excellent corrosion resistance, and good weldability. Monel K-500 is an age-hardenable version with significantly higher strength (965 MPa tensile) and hardness due to aluminum and titanium additions. K-500 is preferred where high strength plus corrosion resistance is needed (pump shafts, oil well tools), while 400 is chosen for general corrosive service where fabricability is important.
Yes, Monel alloys are among the best materials for seawater and marine environments. Monel 400 offers excellent resistance to flowing seawater, showing corrosion rates below 0.025 mm/year. It is highly resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in marine atmospheres and resists biofouling. This makes Monel ideal for propeller shafts, marine hardware, seawater valves, and offshore platform components.
Monel alloys are widely used in marine engineering (propeller shafts, seawater systems), oil & gas (downhole equipment, valves), chemical processing (acid handling equipment, heat exchangers), aerospace (exhaust manifolds, fuel tanks), and power generation (feedwater heaters, condenser tubes). Their exceptional resistance to acids, alkalis, and seawater makes them indispensable in corrosive environments.
