Titanium Grade 2 is the most widely used commercially pure (CP) titanium grade. It offers an excellent combination of moderate strength, superior corrosion resistance, and outstanding formability. Grade 2 is the standard choice for industrial applications requiring titanium's corrosion properties without the higher cost of alloyed grades. Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the most widely used titanium alloy, accounting for more than 50% of all titanium tonnage worldwide. This alpha-beta alloy combines high strength with low density, resulting in the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any structural metal. With additions of 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, Grade 5 delivers tensile strength exceeding 895 MPa while maintaining good ductility and excellent fatigue resistance. It is the predominant alloy in the aerospace and medical implant industries.

Titanium Grade 2 is commercially pure (CP) titanium with moderate strength (345 MPa tensile), excellent corrosion resistance, and superior formability. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alpha-beta alloy with much higher strength (895 MPa tensile) due to aluminum and vanadium additions, but with reduced ductility and higher cost. Grade 2 is preferred for chemical processing and marine applications, while Grade 5 dominates aerospace structural and medical implant applications where high strength-to-weight ratio is critical.

Titanium offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any structural metal — Grade 5 provides steel-like strength at only 56% of steel's weight. It maintains strength at temperatures up to 400°C, resists fatigue and crack propagation, and is completely corrosion-proof in atmospheric conditions. These properties make it essential for jet engine compressor sections, airframe structures, landing gear, and fasteners, where weight savings directly translate to fuel efficiency and payload capacity.

Yes, titanium is one of the most biocompatible metals known. Both Grade 2 and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) are widely used in medical implants including hip and knee replacements, dental implants, bone screws, and surgical instruments. Titanium forms a stable oxide layer that the human body does not reject, allowing bone to grow directly onto the implant surface (osseointegration). Grade 5 ELI (Extra Low Interstitials) is specifically produced for surgical implant applications per ASTM F136.
